Turning Tides: How food and drink innovators are tackling urgent packaging challenges

When David Attenborough walked out in front of tens of thousands at Glastonbury in June 2019 to thank them for helping to make the Festival (single-use) plastic free he had to re-start his speech twice, such was the applause that greeted the broadcaster. This was one of the most high profile demonstrations of the global movement to cut down on the use of plastic packaging, an accelerating trend that has important and immediate implications for the food and drink industry.

Zero Waste Scotland estimates that 60,000 plastic bottles are thrown away every day in Scotland. According to the Marine Conservation Society, 70% of the litter found in the UK is plastic. The EU has pledged to make all plastic packaging recyclable by 2030. However, this pressing challenge is inspiring action and creative solutions from a host of innovative businesses.
